Culturally and Historically important

Mynydd Mawr, the Tanat and Ceiriog Valleys have a special place in the culture and history of Wales. 

Important sites include:

Castell Sycharth, Owain Glyndŵr’s, the last Welsh Prince of Wales, castle. 

Home of William Morgan, translator of the Bible into Welsh, a pivotal moment in Welsh history.   Click here for more information. 

The area is criss-crossed by prehistoric tracks, Bronze Age burial cairns and Iron Age forts, including Llwyn Bryn Dinas.

The landscape has provided inspiration for important poets, including Huw Morus (Eos Ceriog) and Robert Ellis (Cynddelw).

The history of the area can be seen in the remnants of the multitude of tracks, ancient woodlands, and small field network. Evidence of an ancient landscape.
